About Puerto Galera Protected Landscape and Seascape

The Puerto Galera Protected Landscape and Seascape, located on the northern tip of Mindoro Island in the Philippines, encompasses a unique combination of terrestrial and marine ecosystems spanning 5,280 hectares of coastal rainforest, coral reefs, and mangrove forests. Declared in 1994, this protected area is noted for its breathtaking seascape that includes a rugged coastline, dramatic limestone cliffs, and crystal-clear waters home to one of the most diverse coral reef systems in Southeast Asia. The upland forests are home to numerous endemic and threatened plant and animal species, while the surrounding waters sustain vibrant marine life including endangered sea turtles, colorful reef fish, and thriving coral gardens. Historically, the area has been inhabited by indigenous Mangyan communities who coexist with local fisherfolk and tourism economies. Popular recreation activities include scuba diving and snorkeling in protected marine sanctuaries like the Verde Island Passage, considered the “Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity” globally. Hiking trails through the interior rainforest lead to waterfalls and scenic viewpoints over the bay. Visitors are also drawn to pristine beaches, kayaking expeditions, and seasonal birdwatching. The blend of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, rich cultural heritage, and accessibility from major cities like Manila make Puerto Galera a top eco-tourism destination in the Philippines, promoting sustainable tourism and conservation efforts.
